Why I Choose 304 Stainless Steel Over “Surgical Steel” for STUDIYO Jewelry
If you’ve ever dealt with red, itchy, or irritated ears after wearing jewelry, you know how frustrating it can be to find pieces that are both stylish and comfortable. I’ve been there myself. In fact, my journey with jewelry materials started in 2017 when I was determined to create pieces that were not only modern and understated but also wearable every single day.
At first, I tried all sorts of materials, but I kept running into the same issues: tarnish, irritation, and fragility. I wanted something durable enough for my delicate, architectural-inspired designs but also safe for sensitive ears. That’s when I started testing stainless steel jewelry.
Like many people, I first heard that 316L stainless steel—often marketed as surgical steel—was the “best” option for jewelry. So, I ordered some earrings and necklaces made with it to test for myself. At first, everything seemed fine, but after a few days, I noticed my ears were red, itchy, and tender. I thought surgical steel was supposed to be hypoallergenic!
Here’s what I discovered: surgical steel isn’t always what it seems. 316L actually has a 10-14% percentage of nickel, which allows it to qualify as hypoallergenic by certain standards. But for people with sensitive skin (like me), that nickel content can still cause irritation.
That’s when I turned to 304 stainless steel. While it isn’t labeled as “marine grade,” 304 has a lower nickel content (8-10%)—below the threshold that typically triggers allergic reactions. After years of wearing and testing 304 stainless steel earrings and necklaces, I can confidently say it’s been a game changer. No irritation, no itchy ear lobes, and no worrying about my piercings trying to close up.
Beyond comfort, stainless steel jewelry offers other benefits that make it perfect for understated, everyday pieces:
-
Tarnish resistant: No polishing required, and it won’t turn your skin green.
-
Durable: Strong enough to hold up to daily wear while still looking delicate.
-
Affordable luxury: It gives the elevated look of finer jewelry without the hefty price tag.
That’s why stainless steel jewelry—especially 304 stainless steel—has become the new go to for my designs. Whether it’s earrings, necklaces, or cuffs, I can trust the material to deliver on both quality and comfort. And if you’ve ever struggled with sensitive ears or high-maintenance metals, I think you’ll love it too.
