Why Does Your Ear Cuff Keep Falling Off? (And How to Fix It)
If your ear cuff keeps sliding, twisting, or falling off entirely, you're not doing anything wrong. The good news: in almost every case, it comes down to two things, placement and a clean ear, and both are easy to fix.
Why ear cuffs slip in the first place
Ear cuffs work by gripping the cartilage of your ear with gentle pressure. A few things can throw that off:
- Ears can be waxy. Don't worry it's natural! Natural oils and earwax in and around your ear create a slick surface that's harder for metal to grip. But a quick clean can help your cuffs get a strong grip.
- Placement. Every ear has a slightly different shape, and the spot where a cuff sits securely isn't always where you'd guess.
- Cuff style. Our conch cuff and our lobe cuff stay put in different ways, so the fix is different for each.
Here's how to dial in the fit for our two most popular styles.
Adorn Cuff: push it down onto your conch until it feels snug
The Adorn Cuff is designed to wrap around the conch, the curved shell-shaped part of your ear above the lobe. The fix here is mostly about placement and pressure:
- Slide the cuff on from behind your ear on the outer edge of your conch. Use a back to front motion.
- Gently push it down, toward the center of your ear, until you feel it settle against the cartilage.
- It should feel snug, like a firm hug, not loose or wobbly. If it still feels loose, push it down a little further into the conch rather than higher up.
The conch has more surface area and natural curve than the upper ear, so once the Adorn Cuff is seated correctly, it has a lot to grip onto.
Lobe Lite Cuffs and Lobe Cuff Base: start with a clean ear, then find your spot
Lobe Lite Cuffs and the Lobe Cuff Base have a flexible arm, which makes them compatible with more ear shapes, but it also means oils and placement matter even more.
- Before putting them on, wipe your ear with a gentle cleanser like witch hazel or to remove any oils, lotion, or hair product residue.
- Gently pull open the cuff and slide it on starting under your lobe, then all the way up to catch the cartilage above the lobe.
- Try the cuff in a few different spots along the outer edge of your ear, not just the lobe. For many people, it feels more secure higher up on the ear, where the cartilage is firmer.
- Once you find a spot where it feels snug without pinching, that's your spot. Most people land on the same spot every time once they find it.
If you wear earbuds, glasses, or a mask regularly, keep that in mind when choosing placement, since friction from those can shift a cuff over the course of a day.
General tips for a secure fit, no matter the style
- Clean ears with a gentle cleaner to remove oils and ear wax
- Take cuffs off before swimming or vigorous workouts. Sweat and water reduce grip.
